Wedding Celebration: Chocolate & Peanut Butter Cake

Chocolate Layer Cake with Peanut Butter Buttercream Filling, Whipped Chocolate Ganache Frosting, and topped with Vanilla Buttercream with Red Sugar Roses

Chocolate Cupcake with a ring Whipped Chocolate Ganache, Chopped Salted Peanuts, Peanut Butter Buttercream and half a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup

These cakes were prepared for a small party to celebrate friends getting married in two weeks. We live in Heidelberg, but not everyone is able to travel to Ireland for the wedding.  Sooo, a dinner party and cake was just the ticket.

Heidelberg Castle...the view from my living room.
Not wanting to prepare a full blown wedding cake or a groom's cake...I tried to split the difference with chocolate and peanut butter and vanilla and pretty roses.

After the baking was completed, I built the cake...double layer (each layer was quite thick) with a generous  filling and crumb coat of peanut butter buttercream.  After it set-up in the cake fridge, I covered it with whipped chocolate ganache and accents of white vanilla buttercream.  The red sugar roses are from Wilton.

While the layer cake was setting-up in the cake fridge, I decorated with cupcakes.

I usually don't use a large round piping tip with chocolate since, I think, the resulting
frosting looks like poop on a cupcake.  For this, I knew I was adding more on
top and suspected the additional chocolate bump would be a delicious component.
These are the 1A and 1M piping tips I used for this project.

Mostly uniform in shape and size.  Also, the two layers plus 16 cupcakes were from one batter.

The chocolate base...
...I dipped the cupcake into a bowl with chopped salted peanuts.

Peanut Butter Buttercream Swirl...

...with half a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup.

Use of just the right cake stand/tower also helped in suggesting a 'wedding' theme.  I really liked the way it looked at the restaurant, Kulturbrauerei.

It was a great evening with friends.  Dinner, laughing, talking story, catching up, and enjoying cake... life is fantastic.
